No Dave, my family didn't own the pharmacy . I got asked that all through school. It really threw people for a loop when my mom worked there for awhile though. My last name is Keogh and the pharmacy is Kehoe. My moms maiden name and family is Stevenson ,Marlene, Andy ,Donovon, and Mike. My grandfather that was also Andy. Maybe that rings a bell. Scott

Do they call the granite intrusion?
Yes, Granite is an "intrusion", or "intrusive". It's mineral structures are formed deep underground. Basalt, Granite and Obsidian are of the same mineral make up. The only difference is the rate at which the material cools, thus allowing the different minerals to crystalize at different rates and sizes. Obsidian cooled quickest, Basalt next, and Granite cooled the slowest. Each mineral is more evident, larger crystals, the slower it cools. Large, clear Quartz crystals cooled slower than the more common "White Quartz". Quartz is also an "intrusion", mainly made up of Silica. The different colors of Quartz is evidence of other minerals being present. Copper, Iron, etc.

I wish I just I could get to the basement. I might find some bigger pieces. What would be the process of finding out where bedrock might be? It could be 10 feet down or 200 feet down. On my friends claim about 20 miles as a crow flies away ,he is on granite bedrock. I think my area is much deeper to bedrock, but I'm no expert. Would core drilling or ground penetrating sonar work? It would probably not be cost effective anyway.

Without being there, It's kinda tough to tell ya what to read. It is true, that gold can be found on the bedrock, but there is gold in the overburden too.
Canyons are better than meadows, at any scale. You look for the 1" canyon in a 4 inch meadow. Follow me?
Look for outcroppings in the immediate area. Do ya have exposed rock higher up on the canyons your streem runs through? How much exposed, and the angle at which the erroded material lies below the exposure. Dang, I wish I could draw ya a picture. It would be easier for me to explain.
Basicly, ya start with geometry. You look at angles, slopes, and ya gotta kinda see "underground" with your mind's eye to see the convergence of angles or planes. Ya hypothisize a lot. It's not an exact approach, but you can get a fairly good idea. If ya have shear Granite, Basalt, Limestone, etc. canyon walls, then you may be working a fault. Not that it is the San Andreas, but a fault just the same. It may only run a few hundred feet. Not much more than a large crack.
If you have a lot of overburden, you'll want to look for pay streaks parallel to the stream and any channel changes your stream may have made. I'd start with digging across the stream and test pan often. If ya hit a "Pay Streak", now you can work parallel to the stream.
It's kinda like looking at a kids' book, ya just have to know what the pictures mean. LOL

Test drilling is not really a good way to go. You may hit a bolder and think you are at the bed. Several holes would have to be drilled to make a determination. ( and still get fooled ) And yes, it is pricey$$$.

I found some info on the web to use to find geology reports. Try google books. Also if you have old mine names try googling MRDS(mineral resources data system) you can get some info there and also mark it on google earth.
