A few years ago we had been working a creek up in Idaho. We being a few Family members and friends had gone to this area in the St.Joe and it was a hike straight down and I mean straight down! you couldnt side hill it was so steep youd slip and slide 25 to 30 feet maybe more so it was almost like a butt scoot type of downhill< im sure youve seen areas like this before yourselves anyway it took us about 2 and a half hours to get down to where it finally leveled off . when we reached this point My Uncle who was leading the way said it wouldnt be much farther and then we would rest once we got into this creek bottom that we were going to prospect in . Well all I could think of at the time was that climb back out of there ! But I didnt say anything cause I didnt want to be concidered a weak link or anything like that !
We had seen several Elk and a few Deer and we knew there was Bear and Wolves in this area as well. I wasnt to concerned cause I knew there were a couple of pistols in the crowd and by having a group its less likely to be surprized by anything in fact I was surpized we seen the ones we did.
After about another half an hour we came up on this one ridge and it flattened and the trees opened up and you could see forever and you could start to hear the creek . My Uncle had told us he found this area while Hunting he had shot an Elk and had tracked into this creek (anyways this creek has gold) and its layout is it drops a ways then a pool - drop pool - drop pool and so on.
Well we got there unpacked our gear and made a camp first that way it was aready done and got to work we were going to work in groups of three so there were nine of us so three groups I headed up to the higher end of this one pool it just caught my eye my two cousins came over and the rest went down further . we set our sluice in and started feeding it after about ten minutes or so we heard some yelling down below so we went to check it out . My Uncle and Dad had found the first nugget it wasnt real big but hey its here. my cousins and I got back to our box and after setting for awhile while we were gone it had cleared up and all we could see was small gold so right away my cousins were ready to go help my Dad and Uncle out (imagine that) well that gold just didnt pop out of the ground down there I told myself and besides this looked good I liked the way it was holding a good pool of water with a few bigger rocks laying about halfway through it was telling me it was a good place for it to drop out. anyway I continued to feed the box this went on for at least a hour or so and I heard them again ! they found another I sat down and was taking a breather and noticed the yellow in the sluice was twice as much as before anyway I could continue to tell all the details be to shorten up a bit we continued to work for three days in this spot and the total was just under a ounce in powder and 5 really nice pickers Down below was 3 small nuggets and quarter ounce in my book my spot was better cause id found a little pocket of fine gold

There's a place called "The Cuzzie Hole" in Alabama. They call it that because it's a 10 foot waterfall and in the middle it has wallered out a hole. If you sit in it, the waterfall comes in and makes bubbles and such just like a jacuzzi. Well then it goes down another 5 feet to where the original hole was wallered out.
"I wonder what's in the bottom of that hole?" That conversation between my dad and I is how it all got started! We plotted and planned and got permission from the property owner and set out to find out...
A friend of ours does gutters so he brought some big ones out and we ran that creek over our our heads by tieing the gutters to the trees above. Worked like a charm. We broke out a 2" dredge and started working the hole for about an hour when the dredge died on us! We took the whole operation down...
Down and out but not finished... We did it again years later and found out that the hole was about 15 feet deep under about 8 feet of soot and rocks that we pulled out of there one bucket at a time. We carved our names in the bedrock at the bottom with the date, took our gutters down and left with the undenyable truth... no wedding rings, confederate gold, or other hidden treasures... The amount of gold we did find might had paid for the gas we used but I didn't have a calculater on me at the time so I'm not sure. (lol)
We had a great time though and about 10 of us earned the rights to tell one heck of a story!
Take care friends & happy hunting Scott Meadows

Here a couple weeks ago I was prospecting in southern Arizona down near the border. After a few hours, I looked up and couple hundred yards away were a group of men looking at me - all dressed in black and carrying very large packs on their backs. I dove into the bushes and disappeared running quickly up a ravine. If you are near the border areas, drug runners can be every bit as dangerous as drug growers.
I didn't get any gold that day, but a few days later at a place farther north, I did get a nice 1 gram piece.

Chris maybe they just wanted to say hi or get some tips on prospecting! hell, maybe they would even let you give them lessons on how to use their new err...your metal detector? ;D ;D

Actually I think they were wanting me to check my metal detector on some very fast moving pieces of lead - just to see if the detector could pick them up when they are moving twoard me so fast.

So, you want a story, eh?
Went Gold prospecting last fall.....
Took a bud up with me, waaaaayyyyyy up this mountain. We got out and did a little diggin' and a couple of pans. We decided to move on down the canyon and try this stream, after a few other streams had joined. I turned the key,.....click, click, click. So we roll start 'er. She ran just long enough, to get through the stream, to the downhill side. We managed to push 'er about 30 yds and caught major gravity. Down the mountain we go, bouncin' along while not having P brakes or P steering. I couldn't resist a little ole mountain boy "Yeeee,....Hawww" LOL.....I swear we went "air borne", at least twice. We made it about 3 miles and came to a hill we couldn't make over. We were only about maybe 50 yds from the next drop. A guy in a Dodge diesel came by, and asked if he could help. He had a chain and we hooked up. Took us to the next rise and cut us loose. Ha-Ha,.....off again. Now it's gettin' to be fun. LOL My buddy's yellin',"No Brakes,....NO BRAKES!!!" I hollered, "Yes, I have brakes and I'm usin' third for a compression brake, when I need it". He says, "No,.... no brakes, or we won't make it over the next rise!" I couldn't help it, had to LOL. The last time the Dodge dropped us off, after pullin' and droppin' us off three times before, we were still about 4 miles from cell phone service. It was a paved road and with lots of down. We rolled off and picked up to about 40. Up ahead, Frenchman Dam. We rolled around a turn, and across the dam. On the other side was a stop sign. Road was clear, so I ran the stop sign. Make a left turn, and hang on, 'cause its about 3 1/2 miles of Vette road. One twisty Mo-Fo. At the bottom, we went past the camp ground at around 55. We coasted down about another mile. A cop gave us a lift to a little town about 3 miles away. We were only about 2 miles from where I grew up, so I'm in no way lost, or ever was, durin' this whole trip. We start hitchin' and walkin'. Got about a 1/4 mile and this car pulls over. A young girl, prob early 20's, leans over an says, "The dog in the back likes to eat people. I have a knife and my boyfriend and I are serial killers." I said, "So, does that mean I can, or can't, keep my guns?" She laughed and told us to get in. She took us all the way to my Bud's house. We picked up a fresh bat and went back to my truck. Put in the bat and she fired right up. (fried alternator) I said, "I'm closer to home than your place, I'll bring the bat by later." Hopped in and drove home. "Honey,.......I'm back,......guess what,.........". The dog was good dog. The boyfriend was cool enough, and the little girl behind the wheel? Cuter'n a Bugs Ear", as the sayin' goes. Funny too. But,.......TOO dang close to my G-daughter's age,.......sigh......If I was,.... say,....24? I still wouldn't have made it home. LOL Really, I had a great time. Got some good exercise pushin' the truck. Truck? Oh ya, it was Big Red, a '86 Ford 3/4 ton, 460, 4x4 and a 4 sp w/granny, long bed. They don't come much heavier than "Big Red". 56 hun lb's, I believe. Got some fresh mountain air, drank spring water, and even got to put my knee in the mud to get the drink. Got my feet wet, and went on a roller coaster ride. Hey, life don't get no better, eh? Next time, I would hope to do some prospectin' too. LOL
