I have a claim in Plumas county on a small creek where the ancient Jura river ran through. There was some hydraulicking done there, also some drift tunnels and placer mining. I'm finding fine gold and some small flat pickers in all of the gravels everywhere on the creek. The problem is I can't find any bedrock. I have lots of giant round granite boulders, lots of rounded cobbels. Waldamer Lindgren talks a little about my area but the info is vague. I also have a book from the Cal division of mines on plumas county and it talk about my area, but with little info. Any leads would help. Thanks, Scott From Beautiful Portola ,ca

ok so your in the GENESEE District. www.museumca.org/goldrush/district.html Good website with information but they didnt add your district to the webpages. Clark, W. B., 1970, Gold Districts of California, California Division of Mines and Geology, Bulletin 193This book has alot of good information in it about the hole State. Jeff

Sometimes granite weathers deeply and there is not "hard" bedrock so to speak, as you might find in larger rivers. Is this a possibility at your location?
As far as geology reports, the Calif. Bur of mines did many reports on Plumas county. The library at the mackey School of mines ivery extensive.

Scott, Ive also got claims in the area! wow were neighbors kinda, Anyway are you finding that real heavy purplish grey looking sand?( it will turn the water in my gold wheel a Reddish Orange color ) but I to am finding lots of fines(lots)and a few flat pickers! but I havent figured out this heavy sand its plugging up my riffles and im having to clean up more often any suggestions??? Now if put some in a rock tumbler and the purplish color will grind away and make a real thick slurry and there is lots and lots of fines floating on the water the grey turns a blackish grey and its real heavy!

Yes, I've encountered a few layers with the purpleish grey and found some fines in it. I think the good layer to be in is in the redish orange layer. I think they call it a gossand layer and my friends and I have found it to be very productive layer. As far as the black sand clogging up the riffles maybe try one of the new heavy hitter sluice magnets they are advertising in the ICMJ . I get plenty on black sand but it does'nt load me up though. On my friends claim though north of Taylorsville we hit pockets that will load your box up in just a few minutes. Thanks for the input, hope to meet you sometime, Scott

Hello Google Earth has a gadget that will overlay some areas with the geological maps of the underlying rocks and faults.

Scott, Just wanted to say Hey. "Hey Scott!" I was born in Portola, Ca. Year of the "Big Snow". My G-pa and uncle used to work at Walker Mine and G-pa had a ranch in Genesee. He used to have a claim up Indian Creek. Dumb ol' unk let it go back in the 50's.

Hey Steelpan Dave, You were born in 52. My grandfather was the last chief if police of portola. Maybe you might know him or some of my family? My uncles and my mother all went to school in portola. My grandpa was quite a prospecting fool. Some of mmy G-pa's biggest were found on indian creek. I also had family in cresent mills that ran the store there. My house where I live was brought down from Walker Mine after its closing. Thanks so much for the info. Scott
